Iran Urges Unity in the Face of Israeli Aggression: A Morning in Doha with Masoud Pezeshkian
Doha, Qatar – Thursday morning (October 03, 2024) in Doha saw more than just diplomatic handshakes and coffee at the Asia Cooperation Dialogue (ACD). Iran's President Masoud Pezeshkian stepped into the spotlight, urging Islamic countries to unite against Israel for the sake of Middle Eastern peace. He spoke directly with Saudi Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan, stating that a divided Islamic world invites future aggression—what happens in Gaza and Lebanon today could happen elsewhere tomorrow.
Pezeshkian’s tone was urgent but brotherly. “We consider Islamic countries, including Saudi Arabia, as our brothers,” he noted, emphasizing that it's time to set aside differences for more convergence and unity. The stakes are high—those under attack by Israel are, in Pezeshkian's words, "our brothers and sisters"—a sentiment he seemed determined to make central to regional politics.
The backdrop for this dialogue was Iran’s recent military action against Israel, which Pezeshkian framed as a measured response to Israel's breach of promises for a ceasefire in Gaza. He reiterated that Iran did not welcome increased tensions but stressed their recent operations were legitimate reactions to ongoing injustices. Saudi Arabia, meanwhile, showed a willingness to thaw relations, with Faisal bin Farhan expressing hope that Iran would act wisely in handling the tensions and striving for peace.
There was also a rare moment of warmth between Iran and Saudi Arabia. Faisal mentioned their shared intention to put past disagreements behind them and work as partners. “Let’s settle our issues and strengthen our ties as two friendly and brotherly nations,” Faisal added, leaving a glimmer of hope amid an otherwise tense Middle Eastern morning.
